First Day in Peru

On our first day in Peru Matt and I toured a rural Peruvian home. The family donned traditional Peruvian clothing, and fed us some traditional Peruvian food. We were offered fried quinoa bread, coca tea, and potatoes dipped in a sauce made mostly of clay. The bread and the tea really were delicious, and the potato dipped in clay was much better than I anticipated. We were told the clay is good for digestion.

The bulls pictured below were perched on the top of an arch leading into the family home. I saw a lot of bulls and other ceramic animals and ceramic pots on top of homes (even on the tops of homes that were not regularly visited by tourists :) ). It is my understanding that the bulls are placed on roofs to bring good luck and fertility.

We saw many alpacas in Peru, and purchased some alpaca socks, hats, and sweaters. The girl living in the home we visited posed with some alpacas for the tourists.

In my next post I'll write a bit about visiting cemeteries while vacationing, and how that went for Matt and I on our first day in Peru. (Hi Jim! Hi Julie!)
